Just watched the premiere epi of the new Doctor on Prime TV.

I have to say, that was pretty darn nifty!

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

They really are good and they get better. The Dalek epsiode was one of the most brilliant and chilling TV SF I have ever seen. The episode where Rose meets her dead father was a wonderful tribute to the importance of the orginary man and deeply moving.

Jon

Whether we become a multi-planet species with unlimited horizons, or are forever confined to Earth will be decided in the twenty-first century amid the vast plains, rugged canyons and lofty mountains of Mars Arthur Clarke

Oh man, "Father's Day"..... I'm afraid the Kiwis have to wait a few weeks for that one, but I have to agree -- that was intensely moving. It made me cry each time I watched it. Doctor Who has never done that to me before. Actually, hardly any movie or TV show makes me cry; I'm just not a crier. But "Father's Day" did make me cry. It's pretty emotional.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Made me cry too, but I was watching it with my daughter and she cried. Oh people, harden up!

Mind you, I did 'have something in my eye' a couple of times during The Lion King, made worse by the fact I was on a date at the time! From your advanced warnings, I think I might have to be dicing up a couple of kilos of onions for a nice winter soup while I'm watching that story!

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

What was that wonderful quote? Soemthing like "just an ordinary man, that makes him one of the most important people in the universe".

Jon

Whether we become a multi-planet species with unlimited horizons, or are forever confined to Earth will be decided in the twenty-first century amid the vast plains, rugged canyons and lofty mountains of Mars Arthur Clarke

Don't worry, SpaceKiwi, it's definitely tearful in a good way. It's not a horribly obvious yank-your-emotional-chain tearjerker. It's a deep look into the characters, their motivations, dealing with guilt, doing what needs to be done, saying what needs to be said, and so on. It's really quite remarkable storytelling. The actual plot is fairly simple, and you get a good idea fairly on of how it will have to end. But what's interesting is how they get there, not in terms of simple mechanics, but in terms of the characters coming to terms with what's going on. It's very good. One of the best Who episodes ever, easily. You'll enjoy it.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

I would second this. Some films films manipulate people's emotions, but trhere is no shame in being moved to tears by a powerful story well told.

Jon

Whether we become a multi-planet species with unlimited horizons, or are forever confined to Earth will be decided in the twenty-first century amid the vast plains, rugged canyons and lofty mountains of Mars Arthur Clarke

It's a wonderful feeling, isn't it? Waiting all this time for a new Doctor Who, and *not* being horribly disappointed. It's not what I was expecting -- but that's fine, because I wouldn't want it to be too predictable. It's Who, and that's the main thing.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

They have done a magnificent job.

I enjoyed them thoroughly, because the BBC productions team did what you'd think was nearly impossible - simultaneously retain that unique, low-budget Dr. Who flavor, but they upgraded them up to a hollywood level.

Just amazing

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

The best episode so far has been the one from a couple of weeks ago (here), the one where they are on the space-station which controls the media. Really liked that one, good story, well acted and featuring a dude from the UK comedy show Big Train.

I would give you the episode name, but I've just been across to the Beeb's official site and can't find any mention of Eccleston's Doctor at all. All the other Doc's seem to be there so a bit poor on the BBC's part, especially when that season is still the 'current' season for many fans around the world.

I have to say, I have been quite impressed with Billie Piper. Didn't think she was up to much in the singing department, so good to see she has some talent in this area. Eccleston is still not sitting well with me. I think it's the bovver boy haircut and the ears!

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Yes, true. But he does have that odd, perky, Doctor type of charm. Personally, I think he did a credible job, all things considered.

And yes, Billie Piper is a *hottie*

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

I think you may be referring to ep 7 "The Long Game". An episode guide is available here at BBC .

Remember to keep an eye out for graffiti or other references to "Bad Wolf".

"keep it simple, stupid!"/safety_wrapper>

I'm about to watch the episode "Unquiet Dead" shortly.

***WARNING*** I'm about to post a spoiler, for those who haven't seen the series yet.

It surprised the hell out of me in "End of the World," when the Doctor stated that there was a war, and that Gallifrei and the rest of the Time Lords were dead. Came right out of left field, it did.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

. It's Who, and that's the main thing.

Applaude the sentiment, Calli, if not the syntax !

We just saw Rose meet her dad. One of the better Who stories i have ever seen.

I liked it how, stripped of his Tardis, aware that the time-glitch-cleaning-beasts COULD NOT be stopped, the Doctor just kept on keeping on.

(they are inside the church. No weapons against them. People to save)

"Get behind me, I am the oldest thing here".

Thats how the Doctor dies, fighting for the weak.

Is that the first time you can remember the Doctor actually being killed, oh resident sage of things Temporal ?.

Can't agree with you avaunt mate! I thought the latest story was decidedly average. They are taking a few 'crash the Enterprise' type liberties though. What was with killing off all the Daleks and Time Lords in the earlier story and now giving the Doc the archer, albeit temporarily (or should that be temporally)? Next thing we will hear is that The Master has retired to a nice Rest Home in Bournemouth or something!

I will concede that one of the best moments of the series so far happened in this episode though, when the Doctor opened the the police box and it was just a police box!

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Cheers kane, Yevaud, I'm buggered if I could find that when I had a womble around the website earlier today! I was beginning to wonder if Eccleston was the "Doctor We Don't Talk About At The Beeb' because they are annoyed he decided to do a runner after just one Season.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Oh no, not at all. I've seen some interviews with the cast and crew, and they apparently understand his decision. A weekly show that involved is pretty wearing, after all.

Personally, I think (from what I've seen so far) that he did a very good job, even if he did only last a year. Pity. I could see him doing it for a few years, too.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

In reply to:

"Get behind me, I am the oldest thing here".

That keeps replaying in my head. It's gut-wrenching. I think "Father's Day" is my favorite episode of the season, although there are some other wonderful moments to come.

"The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances" is in many ways a flash back to the Hinchcliffe days (early Tom Baker) when they had so many lovely creepy stories. The phrase "Are you my mummy?" shouldn't be scary, but in this story it sure is. I also like Captain Jack, who will be introduced in that story; he's a good foil for the Doctor. Plus, it does help having a companion who actually understands what the Doctor's talking about on a technical level.

"Boom Town" is a somewhat forgettable story, but it's not the plot that you want to watch in this one. As in "Father's Day", the plot isn't important. It's just what has to happen in order for the story to occur. What's important is how the characters interact. We see Rose's boyfriend again; I can't help thinking he deserves somebody who'll actually stick around for him. The Doctor has some interesting moral quandries in this one, talking philosophy with someone who had twice attempted to casually slaughter large numbers of people in pursuit of personal gain. It sets things up for the two-parter finale.

"Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways" is fast-paced, dramatic, and has lots of action. Lots of death, too. If you enjoyed "The Long Game", you'll enjoy this one too. It's set largely on Satellite Four, a century after "The Long Game", when the station is now called the Gamestation. The Doctor's repairs to the timeline did not succeed and humanity is in a disastrous decline, glued to their television sets watching reality shows. It has a lot of fun at the expense of today's reality shows, and one of the funniest moments comes in the teaser at the beginning of "Bad Wolf". Watch for the moment

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Thanks mate. Yes, the casual, firm way The Doctor went to his death, is the reason i like the character. Anyone with a time machine, could avoid all risk, couldn't they. But he seeks it out.

Sometimes i think the Tardis is aware, otherwise, how come everywhere the Doctor goes, there is a baddie, and THIS is the moment that a single hands' leverage is enough to topple him?.

If I'm not mistaken, it was pointed out in the Tom Baker days that the Tardis *is* aware.

Just saw Father's Day.
