Way to go JAXA! I hope this huge laboratory and it's counter-parts become a craddle for some of the world's greatest scientific discoverys.

                            www.watchnasatv.com

                          ONE PERCENT FOR NASA!

Replying to:

Great info, thanks Wayne. I missed the briefing today. The issue with the SARJ scares me. This phrase in paticular " breaks irretrievably" puts a lump in my throat.Am I right that this could limit crew size? I don't think I'm the only one who has really been looking forward to 6+ on the station. side note: I seriously did a "spit take" when I read "thunder box". Haven't heard that one before...lol. Thanks earth_bound_misfit
Posted by thor06

Just to clarify, the "breaks irretrievably" words were mine, no one aver said those words, or I would have put it in quotes. It is the impression, that they will try and use the current ring (or raceway) as long as possible until they understand the root cause of the problem. They don't want to switch to the other ring until they have to. One such circumstance would be if it really broke or locked up. Once they understand it, they may indeed switch to the other ring if that is indicated, but if they do that, there is no backup. So wait as long as possible, and baby this one along while troubleshooting/repair goes on.

That would cause serious power problems for the ISS, limiting how much work could be done, and future power consuming modules could be installed.

But the Krell forgot one thing John.
Some clarifications and answers:

No, the STS toilet would be at the "edge" to support everyone but we are trying to work that out because we know they will ("Hey droogies, you can use ours for number 1, and number 1 only" - not very poltical). I am not optimistic that the spare filter will work since we know it has the same manufacturing defect as the others do. But we can figure out if that is really the problem and then perform a work around (i.e., punch a hole in it perhaps).

The braycote lubrication being applied is only a test of a small part to test techniques - not lube the whole ring. The objectives are to test a suspicious bump/crater, try to see if we can clean some of the material off and apply the lube. Also a TBA will be installed.

As we are getting ever nearer to the STS-124 launch in 19 hours or so, I'd just like to wish SG and erioladastra (if you're supporting this mission) the best of luck with getting Discovery safely into LEO and on her way to ISS. I'm looking forward to another productive and trouble-light mission over the next couple of weeks, and will certainly be watching with a great deal of interest. As always, I will also be looking forward to your insights and observations from the 'front lines' as things get underway.

Good-luck Guys, and Godspeed Discovery and the '124 crew.

SK

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!

Once the baqckup is damaged the whole thing is a loss. Similar problems haven't shown up on the other assemblies, so it sounds like it is a materials, alignment or assembly failure in that one unit.

One alternative would be to go to Wally World and by a case of canned air and blow the stuff out. Run it a while and see exactly where the problem is. Replacing the entire assembly would probably take a dedicated Shuttle mission and everytime anyone talks about extending the arbitrary deadline for the Shuttle the red flags start waving.
